45th Humberside County Cross Country Championships

Weelsby Woods – Grimsby

Sunday 5th January 2020

The 45th, Humberside County, cross country championships, were staged on Sunday the 5th of January, at Weelsby woods in Grimsby. All age groups, from under 11 boys and girls, up to senior men and women, were in competition at the Championship meeting, where a total of 210 athletes, competed in the races. Fifteen Kingston athletes competed at the event, winning six individual medals. In addition, the Kingston under 15 girl’s team, won the gold team medal. Performance details, for all of the Kingston athletes are as follows.

Under 11 Girls – 2 Kilometres Race

The Kingston representatives, in the under11 girl’s race, were India Unsworth, and Lucy Hope. India, who has been training at Costello, since early 2019, competed in the Humber league matches, throughout the spring and summer, of that year. She made both her Cross country and championship debut’s, at this meeting. She ran in the under 11 girl’s, two kilometres race, taking a 10th place finish, running the course, in a time of 9:34 sec. Lucy Hope, has been with the club, since 2017, and she made her cross country debut, at the 2018 County championship event, in Costello Park. Lucy took 13th place at this years meeting, covering the course, in a time of 10:00 sec.

Under 13 Girls – 3.4 Kilometres Race

Lydia Greenwood, was the sole Kingston representative, in the under 13 girls race. She has been with the club, since the summer of 2017, and she made her County Championship debut, at the 2018 event, which was held, in Scunthorpe’s Quibell Park. Three months later, she represented the County, at the national Inter Counties championships, which were staged in Loughborough. Lydia took a 6th place finish, in Weelsby woods, running the course, in a time of 14:46 sec.  

Under 13 Boys – 3.4 Kilometres Race

There were two, Kingston athletes, in action in the under 13 boy’s race. Alfred Scruton, and hurdles specialist, Nathan Hope. Both of them, were making their cross country and championship debuts. Alfred won the silver medal, running the 3.4 kilometres, in a time of 13.36 sec. Nathan took a 7th place finish, covering the course in a time of 15:11 sec.

Under 15 Girls – 4.2 Kilometres Race

Five Kingston athletes, were in competition, in the under 15 girls, 4.2 Kilometres race. All of them have been involved, in the current 2019/2020, cross country competitions, performing well, at both the Northern Counties championships and at the National championships. The first of the Kingston girl’s, to finish the course was Georgina North, who crossed the finish line In 2nd place, taking the silver medal, running a time of 17:48 sec. Jess Waugh was the next Kingston athlete to finish, crossing the line in 4th place, running a time of 18:14 sec. Aimee Campbell, took 5th place in the race, navigating the course, in a time of 18:29 sec, and in 6th place was Anya Beetham, who ran a time of 18:30 sec, and 7th place went to Emma Hoggard, who ran the course, in a time of 18:50 sec.

The Under 15 Girls team award, went to Kingston upon Hull AC, with gold medals, going to Georgina North, Jess Waugh and Aimee Campbell.

Under 17 Men – 6.4 Kilometres Race

Training partners, Harry Hudson and Tom Smales, represented Kingston, in the under 17 men’s race. They were both in recent action, at the Northern Counties, and at the National cross country relay championships. Tom is also a regular competitor, at the Up & Running South Yorkshire, cross country league. Harry Hudson, was the gold medallist, in the 6.4 kilometres race, running a time of 21:55 sec. Tom Smales, took the bronze medal, covering the course, in a time of 23.02 sec.

Under 17 Women – 4.6 Kilometres Race

There were two Kingston athletes, in action in the under 17 women’s race. The reigning Barton AC Cross country champion, Hermione Pickering, who had her first outing, since last Septembers, Northern Counties relays, and Ella Shaw Hall, whose last competition, was in the 2019 North of England track & field League. Hermione Pickering, took the bronze medal, in the under 17 women’s race, running the course, in a time of 19:04 sec. Ella Shaw Hall, took a 7th place finish, in the race, running a time of 20:24 sec.

Under 20 men – 7.8 kilometres Race

Distance runner, Henry Anderson, made his cross country debut, at this championship meeting. He ran an excellent race, at last Septembers, Jim Dingwall 10 kilometres race, in Elloughton, where he took a 5th place finish, in a field of 282 runners. At this Championship meeting In Weelsby woods, he ran the 7.8 kilometres course, in a time of 32:14 sec, which gave him the silver medal.

Senior Men – 11.8 Kilometres Race

Much missed, former Kingston athlete, Shaun Smith, was the winner of the senior men’s race. He is at university, on the south coast, and runs for Aldershot Farnham & District. He covered the 11.8K course, in a time of 39.54 sec. Gregan Clarkson, took 5th place in the race, running a time of 43:22 sec, which also secured him 2nd place, in the veterans race.
